Is Tarot Dangerous? The Truth No One Talks About

Let’s talk about it.

Because if you’ve ever been curious about tarot, or secretly drawn to it, you’ve probably also wondered: “Is tarot dangerous?”

Maybe someone told you it opens doors you shouldn’t open. Or you’ve heard it invites negative energy. Or maybe, a part of you feels intrigued… but another part feels hesitant.

And you’re not alone in that.

Tarot is a tool that can help you connect with your intuition and gain insight.
Tarot is a tool that can help you connect with your intuition and gain insight.

Tarot has been misunderstood for a long time, shaped by fear, misinformation and a lot of myths that have very little to do with what tarot actually is.

So let’s clear the energy around it.

Because the truth?  Tarot is not dangerous. Let’s say it again for those in the back of the room “Tarot is not dangerous!”

But like anything spiritual, it can be misunderstood.

As someone who has been using tarot cards for more than 30 years and spent my teen years being called a “witch” (why, thank you!) or less favorable terms, I have never had a dangerous thing happen while using them (except for the name-calling).

Where the Fear Around Tarot Comes From

Most of the fear surrounding tarot doesn’t come from experience, it comes from stories.

Cultural narratives, media portrayals and belief systems have painted tarot as something dark, mysterious or even forbidden.

You’ve probably seen it:

  • The ominous fortune teller

  • The dramatic “death card” reveal

  • The idea that tarot predicts doom

But that version of tarot?

It’s not reality.

It’s storytelling.

So What Actually Is Tarot?

At its core, tarot is a tool. That’s it.

It’s a system of symbolic cards that help you:

  • Reflect

  • Gain insight

  • Connect with your intuition

  • Explore your inner world

Tarot doesn’t have power over you. You have power in how you use tarot.

Think of it less like something external controlling your life… and more like a mirror showing you what’s already within you.

The Biggest Myth: Tarot Invites Negative Energy

Let’s address the big one.

The idea that tarot “opens portals” or invites negative entities is one of the most common fears. And also one of the most misunderstood.

Tarot cards are not inherently tied to anything negative.

They are printed pieces of paper with imagery and symbolism.

What gives them meaning is:

  • Your intention

  • Your energy

  • Your interpretation

Just like journaling, meditation or prayer, tarot is a practice.

And like any practice, it reflects the energy you bring into it.

Can Tarot Ever Feel “Off?”

Here’s where we get honest.

While tarot itself isn’t dangerous, your relationship with it matters.

Tarot can feel overwhelming or unhealthy if:

  • You rely on it for every decision

  • You read from a place of fear instead of clarity

  • You give your power away to the cards

That’s not because tarot is harmful. It’s because you’ve disconnected from your own inner authority.

Tarot is meant to support your intuition, not replace it. If you start turning to it for an answer on every little thing in your life, you are giving your power away from it.

I’ll be honest. If I don’t use my cards in a while, I feel drawn to them. It’s almost like when you have a friend and you realize you haven’t talked to them in a while. So you decide you need to reach out. But I don’t use tarot to help me decide every little thing in life.

Tarot Is About Empowerment, Not Prediction

Another misconception? That tarot is about predicting a fixed future.

It’s not.

Tarot shows:

  • Current energy

  • Patterns

  • Possibilities

But you always have free will. Nothing is set in stone.

I always tell people when I give them a reading that things can change. You have the power over your life! Tarot is just showing how things are in the moment based on the current circumstances.

When you understand this, tarot becomes incredibly empowering, because instead of feeling like life is happening to you, you begin to see how you can work with your energy and choices.

If you see the path you are on and the possibility that can come from it and you don’t like it…make a change.

The Truth No One Talks About

Here’s the part people don’t say enough: Tarot requires responsibility.

Not fear, but awareness.

When you sit down with a deck, you’re entering a space of reflection.

You might see things like:

  • Truths you’ve been avoiding

  • Patterns you didn’t want to admit

  • Emotions you’ve been pushing down

And that can feel intense.

But again—that’s not danger.

That’s growth.

How to Use Tarot Safely (and Powerfully)

If you’ve been hesitant about tarot, here’s how to approach it in an aligned way:

Set your intention

Before you pull cards, ground yourself.

Ask for clarity, insight, or guidance. Not fear-based answers.

Stay connected to your intuition

Don’t look outside yourself for all the answers.

Let the cards support what you already feel.

You may already know the answer. You just need some reassurance.

Avoid over-reading

You don’t need to pull cards over and over for the same question.

Trust what comes through the first time.

Take what resonates

Not every interpretation will apply to you. And that’s okay.

You are always allowed to trust yourself first.

Create a calm, grounded space

Light a candle, take a breath, center your energy.

Tarot isn’t about chaos. It’s about connection.

When you are using tarot, you are connecting to your intuition.

So… Is Tarot Dangerous?

No! Tarot is not dangerous.

What can be dangerous is:

  • Believing you have no control over your life

  • Giving your power away to anything outside of yourself

  • Acting from fear instead of intuition

Tarot, when used consciously, does the opposite of that.

It brings you back to yourself.

And that scary “Death” card? Well, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you are going to die or someone you care about will either. The Death card often refers to the death of something. Maybe it’s a job you hate or a relationship that isn’t working out.

It could represent the end of something. Which, we all know, the end of something can open up doors for something new and beautiful.

Final Thoughts

If you’ve been curious about tarot but held back by fear, consider this your permission to explore it from a new perspective.

Not as something to be afraid of, but as something to be curious about.

Because tarot isn’t about darkness.

It’s about awareness. Clarity. And empowerment.

And the more you trust yourself, the less anything, cards included, can ever feel scary.

If you’re just beginning your journey, you might also love exploring how to strengthen your intuition. Because tarot becomes even more powerful when you trust the voice within you
